Haverford Cricket Pavilion & Cope Field
Earliest photo in our collection of Cricket being played on this field. Predates naming as Cope Field.
Note the new Barclay Hall in the background. Pitch is 90 degrees from the current orientation and located near the current nets. For orientation, the location of Sharpless Hall (built 1918) would be to the left. This photo pre-dates the next photo from 1904. Based on the date Barclay was built, this is from the1890s.
Cope Field, exact date unknown, likely after 1904
Note the horse drawn carriage in the background and sight screen. The field appears flatter than today. The field may have been regraded with landfill from Barclay beach and the pond which has since settled. The wicket was packed dirt with short grass and very fast when dry. This location is to the east of the above photo. This location is as far east as possible before the elevation of the hill slopes down.
